Radical Horse Slaughter Group Pushes for Horse Cruelty in Nevada

Fringe Fanatics Fight for Increase in Horse Suffering

United Horseman president Davie Duquette and vp Wyoming Rep. "Slaughterhouse" Sue Wallis

Chicago (EWA) -United Horsemen (UH), a 501c3 non-profit organization that promotes horse slaughter, is taking its fight against the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to a new extreme. Not only does this group oppose every piece of legislation that benefits the welfare of horses but tries to garner support with bogus scare tactics.

The latest attack, made under the guise of a property rights issue, is against a proposed ban on “horse tripping” in Nevada. Horse tripping is a deadly and sadistic event which has found its way into the US from third world “Charro” rodeos and involves roping the legs of a running horse. The event commonly causes fatal injuries or permanent lameness to the animal.

“They are misleading the public with false information and trying to scare people into opposing the legislation. This is not an attack on rodeos or a first step to anything. It is a bill designed to end the cruel, dangerous treatment of horses as was the ban on horse soring.” stated Vicki Tobin of the Equine Welfare Alliance (EWA).

In its latest email to its supporters, UH provides a list of invalid talking points that are an insult to the public’s intelligence and a disservice to American rodeos. The group claims that the Charro Rodeo Association voluntary banned horse tripping in 1995 when in fact, they were forced to do so by a 1994 law, AB 49x – a law that was not spearheaded by the HSUS.

Similar claims of HSUS or PETA involvement are frequently made by this group on animal welfare issues when local organizations and equine advocates spearheaded the initiatives.

When Oregon tried to pass similar legislation earlier this year, the group claimed the law would weaken existing laws and although that is false, they are making the same claims for Nevada.

EWA calls on Nevada residents to support the legislation to ban horse tripping to ensure this cruel practice is never tolerated.

  1. This is disgraceful. Using scare tactics to condone the slaughtering of horses. I really cannot fathom the motives behind such cruelty. Sue Wallis should not use her weight to force these actions into being. What a sad state this woman and her cohorts have in doing this. How else can we support the Humane Society and Peta to prevent this?

  2. I cannot help to think that Sue and her cohorts have something wrong with them or they are looking for quick money, no one in their right mind would ever want to hurt a horse, these people need help bad, greed rules these people, it couldnt be anything else , there is no viable excuse for horse slaughter it is a proven fact !!!!!! Horses are essential for our environment…..Sue and Doink are nothing but idiots there is no other explanation for their behavior they make no sense whatsoever and will never make sense, I wish they would take their idiotic stupid ignorant Ideas and slip back into the woodwork and where they belong stay there, or get some mental help!!!!!! nobody with any Brains that can rationalize listens to them anyway, the horses have enough to deal with without their stupidity …I also cannot understand how the hell this person got into office in the first place???????

  3. This is a Very mentally disturbed social network of cruel inhumane group of so called humans that do this. Some one who is very insane started this so-called action. They should be committed to the insane hospitals. I wonder what their next target is ? the disabled? The fed’s should step in on this issue and put a stop to this. As in many articles that I have read on Slaughter and now this the fed’s classify horses as companion animals. Which means we don’t do this to our pets… This is not a culture thing it’s out right cruel. Citizens in Europe don’t condone such cruel acts. Why is this country turning a blind eye on this tripping event? Enough public pressure and humility on those that promote this cruel act will it eventually put an end to this?

Bill targets violence against animals – News – ReviewJournal.com

    From WILD HORSE WARRIORS:

CARSON CITY — Gina Griesen, president of Nevada Voters for Animals, has fought for years to stop animal abuse in Las Vegas.

So it’s no surprise that she wants state legislators to approve a bill that would make it a felony to kill, torture or maliciously injure an animal.

But she has an even better reason to support Senate Bill 223:

There is a link between animal abuse and domestic violence. Many violent criminals, especially serial killers, started as children who abused animals.

  7. This is the corruption mentality of our government as in Wallis and Dean Rhoads(from the other article), if they want it, they take it. It is also becoming evident in other large enities. The more they take, the bigger and more powerful they become. That is also becoming the mentality of the world anymore, total corruption. And remember the third world Charro rodeos come from a country were they are killing their people over drugs right now and where curelty is a way of life to most people. we can not think for one minute that the drug cartel does not have their interests in the rodeos and are infiltrating our rodeos, in an effort to dumb us down to their levels. Remember this is also the country that has legalized horse slaughter now. Lets hope that our government is not leaning to that kind of mentality, but the more our elected officials open their mouths the more I have to wonder.

  8. If they could only see the horses that have been lamed by tripping they “might” changed their minds. How can anyone say this is humane? This isn’t about ownership rights–its about cruelty to animals.

Roping the legs of a mature horse and ripping them out from under him–I wonder if SS has ever taken a serious fall in her adult life? And no this isn’t a threat. I’m asking if she has ever tripped and fallen. Her her knees to the point of not being able to walk. And if the rest of her body hurts like crazy?

Lameness is just the first issue here. That horse is going to have trust issues for the rest of his life. In most cases they don’t last long. At the end of the year (rodeo) there is a huge glut of horses to be shipped to Mexico for slaughter. Unless someone steps in and buys one or several of them from the killpen.

And this is somehow humane? These people purport to be united for the welfare of the horse. This stand there taking definitely shows their colors. And it ain’t pretty.

  9. Why don’t we try to challenge their 501 status?? It is so bogus anyway. Unless that would hurt others… if they could be, again, shown for what they are; part of their own personal interpretation of a dying culture? Hmmm… mar

  11. I believe that if you own property that could be classified as a farm for tax purposes, horses are considered livestock. From the context of what I have read, this is an advantage for agricultural businesses. The only place that I remember reading that horses are officially classified as companion animals has been through the ASPCA. I could be under informed about this, and would welcome more facts.

There is a part of my brain that understands part of the property argument, but the other side of my brain that says that none of us truly owns another living creature. We don’t own our children, our parents, or our spouses nor do they own us. The idea that we own a horse, a dog, or a cat in the same way that we own a home or a piece of art, and therefore, we can treat these animals as if they had no independent spirit that belongs to them is just incomprehensible to me. Yet, every day children and the elderly are abused or neglected in various ways, and this is really part of the same mind set.

Some people do not need to own animals, and Cruella Sue is one of them. She needs to trade in her barn, chicken house, and jelly jars for a job where all she can touch is cloth, metal, glass, or dead wood. If she gets the urge to ranch, she can play to her heart’s content. Imagine playing the heroine of her life story. She does not dream of being beautiful, loved by a good man, a mother, wealthy or powerful in the traditional sense; no, this anti-hero has created some glorified vision of herself cloaked in the blood and misery of those she owes the most to. To make the sounds, the smells, and the terrors of death your mission in life is too dark a road for even the most calloused hearts.

After reading John Holland’s compelling arguments about the costs of horse slaughter and it’s destructive impact on communities, any responsible representative would be opposed to having this industry move into an area that she cares about. There care not enough dollars in the world to trade for the quality of life issues at stake. &

    • Okay so animals don’t live a kazillion years but when you start having a rash of deaths and money disappearing–its past time to call in an independent investigation. Who you gonna call? GHOSTBUSTERS! (sorry just a bit of a joke there). Seriously, someone like Jack Hanna would know.

And even if they can’t track down who did what when…they should have the common sense to fire everyone starting from the top down. The last of the people to go would be the animals caretakers–cause like it or not–they do do the feeding. And higher ups aren’t gonna know how to manage the animals. They manage money–an altogether different beast.

  15. Horse tripping has long since been one of the potential dangers in movie making and banned for at least a couple of decades now. It just goes to show that there are those who will hold a double standard in the guise of entertainment. Bet none of those fighting against the legislation would put their horses up in such an event. Obviously the “United Horsemen” have little regard for horses and have no qualms regarding cruel and inhumane treatment of horses in any venue. The group has no business calling itself United Horsemen when in reality, they are united AGAINST horses.
