Our Wild Horse “DO” go to Prison

HOUSTON, (Horseback) – The federal Bureau of Land Management is holding wild horses captured during its “gathers” at a Utah state prison.
In a filing today in the ongoing first amendment case of Leigh vs. Salazar, it was revealed in court documents that the animals are being housed at the Central Utah Correctional Facility at Gunnison. The brief, an amendment to a motion for a preliminary injunction filed by Reno litigator Gordon Cowan did not state the number of horses being held.
The revelation that the horses were being held in a Utah prison came when she described in the documents following a truck to the site from the Nevada ghost town, Pioche, to attempt to “rescue” a horse for which she had found a home.
“It took about five hours or more to travel to the prison in
Gunnison, Utah from
Pioche. When arriving, my vehicle was thoroughly searched, all my possessions were searched, my cigarettes were confiscated. I was denied access to my camera, cell phone,” Leigh said in the document. “I was put through a background search. Because of the exhaustive search, I was not able to view the captured horses when they were off-loaded from the trailer.”
“The prison in Gunnison, Utah is contained within a secured area. In other words, it is a prison within another restricted area. The outer restricted area (from the prison itself) is where the wild horses are kept. There are signs at this facility indicating it is a facility of the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro program.”

From what I have been told this prison once had a rodeo and the facilities were built back then. BLM may have upgraded it at some point for holding horses. mar

The Owyhee stallions are gone. Where did they go? Why are we made to stand back while all these individuals are ripped from home and family and sent to places unknown? This will never be forgotten. mar

Mar, I adopted a 5yrs old Blue Roan (and his 20yrs old Sire, out of pity, he has such sad kind face! the old one) Both from the Tuscarosa roundup, which of course included the Owyhee, Rock Creek and Little Humbold! My boys came from the last one LH. The Mustangs from the Rock Creek & LH are still bear Spanish characteristics….amazing!

I have a photo of a huge pit in the paddock, my mare I bought was. I only saw it in the photo, when I downloaded it at home. I called back immediately to tell them to check it and fill it with dirt. I’ll check on it when I’ll pick up the two studs.

Anna that is not a hole or pile of dirt, it is a young horse laying down with its legs towards the camera, you can make out some of its hooves. The foal you see is laying behind it, it is an optical illusion.

Sue Killtoor is neither an uninvolved or disinterested party in the wild equine debate.
She is a killing, proslaughter activist that has been funded with taxpayer and private dollars to kill equines, wild or not and makes a living off of those activities.
Someone that makes misery off the backs of helpless animals AND MONEY is not only a coward, but a cheat to boot!
She and her henchmen cannot and will not speak truth….they speak hate, cruelty and green.

And I would like to know exactly how and why an individual quoted as saying mustangs are worthless can be hired by a Federal entity (ties) charged with protecting them by Federal law…seems contradictory to me, unless, of course those entities really believe the same thing and intended on full extermination of a Federally protected species in the first place.

I just finished reading all the stories from this week, and I have to say..GREAT work everyone..I went from tears to laughter, from cheers to boos and hisses, from anger to hope..It is not often that I allign myself with folks..most often it is animals that inspire me..But this group of advocates is worthy of praise and pride of association, noble and fiesty and not about to give up..I ;love you ALL!!! and keep “passin the Tabasco!!!”

Does anyone know the wild horse holding capacity at Gunnison? I read 800-900 in a fairly recent story from the Deseret News. Also, do they hold the horses within the facility or somewhere else in the area? I can’t imagine where they’d put that many horses on the grounds.

I do believe there are now more horses at the prison in Utah than were left on the range at Owyhee. Hundreds. They left 400 on the range. Does anyone else find this disturbing? I do.

I don’t think the blm has the slighest clue what they are doing; ps that must cost “one pretty penny to transport these Mustangs around; some are shuffled from corral to corral for years on end…

If they put half the amt. of the money they spend on worthless criminals, like the Cattoors, into promoting and halter training the Mustangs in captivity. Their adoption rate would skyrocket. Plus allow people just come to the facility to pick up, I could really “streamline” their program!! Moving around these wild animals is senslessly cruel, because it continually stresses them. I bet they die early because of that too.

I do have my sight on one! he is really beautiful and i try to see him as much as i can!! I wish I could by him But my dad believes that We only own Quarter horses but I do Love this horse and Wish he was mine I wish we could go there and like pet the horses and etc.
