Horse Slaughter

A Horse’s Independence Day Speech Before Congress

by Jerry Finch ~ Founder/President of  Habitat for Horses

I do not know why you have asked me to speak here today, nor do I understand what object you have asked me to represent in the celebration of your Independence Day. You celebrate freedom and justice, reflected in your Declaration of Independence, but that paper does not apply to me, or to any other animal that shares this earth with you.

For your sake, I am pleased that you have reached such high levels of freedom. Would that sole document reflect your outlook for horses as for humans, I would be first to celebrate with you. Sadly, such is not the case, for horses are not included, nor are the safeties and securities granted to you held in common with those of us who have helped you build this great nation. This Fourth of July is yours, not mine. As you celebrate, I must mourn for the loss of millions of my kind to your lust for power and money.

To halter me, tie a lead rope on me and pull me into this magnificent hall to speak of your freedom is once again a sample of your inhumane treatment and a mockery to the justice of which you are so proud. You, who have thrown the bodies of dead horses in stacks that reach to the heavens, ask one of us to tell you of the glories of America? I think not.

For it is not your joy I hear, nor the fireworks booming in the skies. I hear the cry of millions of my kind, tied in backyards, stuck in dark, wet stalls, left unfed and unloved. I hear the plaintive moan of those being trucked thousands of miles to face a horrible death at your hands. As I look out at you, I see them and what you have allowed to happen to them in your name.

On your Independence Day, the future of my kind looks far darker than ever before. Far worse than the conduct of those who occupied these seats in the years before you came, those of you who presently sit within this majestic hall now conduct yourselves with an arrogance that is both revolting and hideous. You have tied yourselves to the pockets of those who profit from the suffering of my kind, you make false statements on their behalf and refuse to represent those constituents whose vote brought you into this once hollowed hall of honor.

I do not stand before you as the honored guest, representing the triumphant battles for freedom I fought with you. I do not stand as your partner in memory of or great history together as we conquered nations, fought our way to the west, plowed fields and fed millions with our combined labor. I will not, for I now know, as do those citizens who call me their friends, what you truly think of my kind. You who occupy these seats have trampled upon the Constitution for the right to pocket pieces of gold. You refuse to represent the horses of this nation when we turned to you. You have made fun, ridiculed and ignored those citizens you represent as they have pleaded our case before you, and for that I can say nothing positive about you, the system you represent or the freedoms you allegedly vowed to protect.

Do I need to stand before you and argue that the slaughter of horses is wrong? That point is past. It is conceded and acknowledged in private and only disputed in public by the repetitious lies of those who profit from your murderous ways. Do I need to show you the truth behind the lies? They are known and open for you, if you are of the mind to look beyond the hands of those who give you money for your next reelection effort. Do I need to tell you of those citizens whom you allegedly represent who want you to stop the slaughter? Look at your call logs, your emails, your fax machines.

Am I to tell you that it is wrong to have us stolen from our loved humans, to be beaten with sticks, shocked, transported without rest or water,, shoved into kill chutes, terrorized and injured by captive bolts or guns , hung by our legs while we are still alive and sold by the pound when we are dead? There is not a man among you who would suffer to the point of death as we do, yet you deny us the right to be free from this horror.

What then is your argument, that you have a divine right to our death? That your interpretation of dominion gives you a reason to kill us for the dollars it places in your pockets? Is that indeed your concept of God’s will? If that is your God, then those humans who love us are not a part of your world.

Those days of intellectual debates are a thing of the past. You do not need to hear the arguments, nor do you need to see the light. Instead, you will feel the thunder, stand in the storm and be burned by the firestorm you created, for those humans that support our freedom are aroused and your hypocrisy toward the honor of your Constitution will bring your downfall.

Do not ask me to celebrate with you, for I am not free. I am your slave, to be destroyed at your whim. Only when you grant the right of the American people to turn their beliefs into laws that stop the insane practice of horse slaughter will I be able to stand before you in honor.

  1. Very moving and very true;

Happy Birthday America, it took over 100 years before the truths this country was supposed to be based on to actually become real for ALL Americans, I hope that the fight for Animal Rights and especially the fight for the Freedom and Protection for our Wild Horses and Burros is moving quickly to the same outcome.

  2. Jerry, If I remember right, wasn’t this Pete’s testimony?
If this is, you forgot to mention that big present he left on the congressional floor. Such an intelligent creature, that one is!
    Thanks, Jerry!
Happy 4th to you and Pete!

    • You remember well, Valerie. In the original story, Pete gave the speech and pooped on his way out of the chambers, a show of his complete disgust at the law makers of this country. That part was deleted in respect for those readers of RT’s blog who are reading as they cook up the BBQ.

  3. I’ll bet most of the readers here wouldn’t be offened by Pete’s offering. What’s that saying…something about a pasture with healthy poop is a blessing to every horse owner?
What Pete left behind on that floor would probably be appreciated by everyone here, even while BBQing!

  4. Here is another slated round-up that we need to comment on

    Release Date: 06/16/10
    Contacts: Chris Hanefeld , 775-289-1842 , chris_hanefeld@blm.gov
    News Release No. 2010-38

BLM Seeks Public Comment on Proposed Silver King HMA Wild Horse Gather

Ely, Nev.—The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely District is seeking public comment on the Silver King Herd Management Area Wild Horse Gather Preliminary Environmental Assessment, which addresses the need to remove approximately 445 excess wild horses from in and around the Silver King Herd Management Area (HMA), to bring the number of wild horses in the HMA to the appropriate management level of about 60 animals. The HMA is located approximately 70 miles south of Ely. The proposed gather is scheduled to begin in September 2010. The BLM will accept comments until July 16, 2010.

Appropriate management level for the Silver King HMA is 60-128 wild horses, but there are currently more than 500 wild horses within the HMA. The proposed gather is needed to remove excess wild horses to help prevent further deterioration of the range, achieve and maintain a thriving natural ecological balance and achieve and maintain healthy, viable wild horse populations. If more than 445 wild horses are gathered, selective removal criteria would be used to return horses to the range. Of the horses remaining on the range, BLM would conduct fertility control measures on mares and/or adjust the sex ratios of the gathered animals to be returned to the HMA to 60 percent male/40 percent female ratios.

Please address written comments to the BLM Ely District Office, HC 33 Box 33500, Ely, NV 89301 attn: Mary D’Aversa, Schell Field Manager. Comments may be submitted electronically to silverkinghma@blm.gov. Comments need to be post marked (if mailed), faxed, or emailed to silverkinghma@blm.gov no later than 7-16-2010.

The only email comments that will be considered are emails sent to silverkinghma@blm.gov. Email comments sent to any other email address WILL NOT be considered.

  5. Here I go again, please pardon me if I say anything to offend anyone. “Happy Birthday, America!!” ?? America may be one of the better countries to live in, compared to many others, but that’s where the “fun” stops. I am NOT proud of my early ancestors, or the hell they brought with them to this country, &, to every living thing in it!! And, NO, America is NOT “home of the FREE & the brave”, unless you’re wealthy or in politics. That would exclude the majority of our citizens, &, ALL of our animals. We can not change history, or what our ancestors did, but, we, as a nation united, CAN change the future!! They came, they destroyed, they stole, they conquered…not very nice!At church this morning, my Pastor commented on how great it is to call this “our land, our country”?? At whose expense?? Maybe, our native American Indians, perhaps our wildlife, maybe even the slaves that were forced to do our work & taken from their homes?? America is a nation of two-faced, back-stabbing, indifferent & greedy politicians & other government “leaders” & liars. I DO respect all the people who have,&, continue to fight for our “freedom”, but, NOT for the ones who sent them into battle. What America is doing to her wild horses disgusts me, they are taking away & destroying a part of us, & a huge part of what made America in the first place, they are betraying the very living creatures that helped us. And, those that condone horse slaughter, well, that’s another thing that sickens me(&, MANY others!!). My flag flys to salute & remember the America that used to be, for all the fallen soldiers, for all the fallen horses, both wild & domestic, &, for all the fallen animal souls that get tossed aside like garbage. “Happy 4th of July, America!!”

  7. Ok. Now you did it. You made me cry. between this article and the one about the fireworks….too much. I try to be tough, just a little on the bitchy side….one grumpy old lady trying to do whatever is possible. It is not nice to make old lady’s cry. And…..if reading these emotional pieces can do this to me…….someone known for being hard as a rock most of the time……..I can only imagine how cold and unfeeling, greedy, calloused, deceitful, immoral, unethical dirty and low down the Sue Wallace’s and BLM employees of the world must be on a day to day basis.

Its them that should be eradicated…zeroed out. What place do they have in this world? Its like the Orks from Lord of the Rings come to life. And in my mind this is how I see them…….ugly, distorted, mutated charicatures mimicing humanity.

This is heartbreaking beyond words. Marti

  8. You should all check out the article about the horses in Iowa breaking free of their bridles and rampaging in the middle of the fourth of july parade. The blog is absolutely humiliating in my opinion in that everyone seems to be concerned with the welfare of the people and children who got hurt and no one seems to be considering the horses whatsoever and what drove them to what they believe was such a “horrific tragedy”. While children being trampled is something very horrific to think about, what I find more horrifying and unforgivable is that we live in a nation where such a majestic creature’s natural desire to live and run free is interpreted as a defect and something out of the “norm”. One person from Iowa said that it was shocking and horrifying because they “have been doing this parade FOREVER” and that they “have had horses in this parade FOREVER”. I don’t think most people understand the meaning of this word, or the fact that despite being one of the YOUNGEST countries in the entire world we are also clearly the among the most despicable and corrupt. If it comes down to who’s been doing what the longest and this is how the norm is established in our supposedly free and fair nation, then it is a matter of simple fact that horses were on this earth far before our feeble human ancestors began to walk upright. I hope the day comes when all of our successors and children are as disgusted by this blatant disregard for the purity, intelligence, and freedom of all life on this earth as so few of us are today. Also, it may seem brutish in light of what many people see as a tragedy but I believe what happened during this parade was an incredibly powerful and necessary message that most people while unfortunately misinterpret since they’re concerned exclusively with human welfare. It is after all, very appropriate I think that these horses chose to act out in such a way on a day that was originally intended to celebrate INDEPENDENCE and FREEDOM. Perhaps some of those who are somewhat less blind and stupid among our people will understand this action and its implications beyond their selfish musings. To those who blame the horses or improper bridle fastening technique I have only this to say: SHAME. You and your children and your children’s children will continue to live these horrors with every passing generation and with increasing intensity until you finally look in the mirror and realize its YOU who is creating and breeding this hatred. The price will be payed and it will be payed by the slaughter of your own kind. Everything comes around eventually, get this in your heads for your own sake: no matter where you’re from, who you are, where you live now, what faith you hold (or don’t) this is a universal truth no one has ever had the means to deny and you will have to live with this reality sooner than you think.
