Captive Calico Wild Horses Continue to Die Under BLM Control

And They Want to Capture 5,000 More

CHICAGO, (EWA) – BLM is only issuing reports once per week. There were 5 deaths over the past two weeks – 3 deaths the week ending June 18 and 2 deaths the week ending June 25. Below is the current death toll and the information on the deaths from the BLM website.

  1. RT, After reading Craig’s report and seeing some of the pictures, I don’t believe there are 5,000 horses left out in NV/CA to roundup.

    • I would tend to agree with you, Jan.

They didn’t even come close to what they estimated was out in the Calico complex and ended up removing ALL the horses. I am also confident that the BLM now holds in captivity probably twice the number of horses that are free on the range. It is a travesty and no one is listening in D.C.

      • Tom Gorey, BLM spinmeister extraordinaire, would tend to disagree:

“After clicking on that link, click on a link called Quick Facts, where you will see our on-the-range population estimate of 38,400 wild horses and burros. The figure comes from aerial surveys and estimated herd growth rates. There are more than 35,000 horses and burros in holding as of May 1.
I would note that the Government Accountability Office issued a report in October 2008 that concluded the BLM was underestimating, not overestimating, the on-range population of wild horses and burros.
In response, the BLM is working on using techiques that will help correct the undercount.”
        Regards,
        Tom Gorey

There is no way there are 38,000 horses left in the wild. I would say it is closer to 18,000. And they are zeroing out the last stronghold of wild horses–Nevada. All so ranchers can raise livestock on some of the most inhospitable land in the country. If ever there were a poor choice of land use, it would be raising water intensive beef cattle in the middle of arid lands. Why they don’t move the cattle East to grass fed pasture lands is just incomprehensible to me. AND Mr. Gorey fails to mention that by October 2010 there will be close to 50,000 wild horses in BLM prisons across the country. Please let Mr. Gorey know his “science” is suspect and his spin hackneyed.

      • P.S. Mr. Gorey is also on record and video last year saying the BLM will really be ramping up the round ups over the next 3 years.

      • “Quick Facts” is bullpudding for the masses. Where and when did they conduct these flyovers? How many were done? Before or after trapping? I don’t consider BLM mathematical “wild ones x acres” estimates over such vast ranges valid. Unless they break down the 38,000 into individual HMAs, the estimate is meaningless, useless, and just more BLM crap.

    • It pains me to give you all nothing but bad news when it comes to the current plight of our native wild horses. But I am hear to publicly acclaim that the heat is on and the BLM is NOT going to be able to hide the truth as hard as they try to keep it from us.

We intend to keep the pressure on until the Roundups stop and we begin to deal with REAL numbers and REAL science instead of conjecture and trumped up BS.

      • That’s what I told ’em in a letter I shot off yesterday – only you said it more nicely. I also told them what I thought about all the elaborate deceptive tactics they have been using lately to get us off guard. I’m especially furious about the way the treated Elyse and Laura Leigh. They spoke to both of them numerous times face to face – and spun all these fairytales about Mega Complexes and allowing Laura to go on a fact finding mission, ALL that sutff, KNOWING full well they were lying in their teeth.

It takes a special person to lie day after day right in someone’s face. I merely expressed my feeling about it. That’s all.

    • I try not to hate anyone. I feel hate is a self-destructive emotion that directly affects the hater, and has little or no impact on the hated. But I do pity people who refuse to recognize the value of protecting the wild ones, and pity those who hate them and actively work to eliminate them even more.

  2. Any time that you feel discouraged, just read this book about Wild Horse Annie. It will help you recharge and pick up your sword again. I just did get a chance to read a bit of it. Here is an excerpt from the letter that was sent to Tracie at the Mustang Project’s blog. When you buy the book, the proceeds go to the preserve and they are doing wonderful work

Wild Horse Annie – BOOK RELEASE: All proceeds benefit ISPMB, Velma’s original organization!

As you know, I have been in the wild horse movement for nearly thirty years now. Our organization has accomplished so much in our past 50 years. Our reputation is impeccable, not only with the BLM but with all the wild horse and burro groups and conservation groups in the U.S. Over the years, we have united more humane and wild horse groups than any other organization.
ISPMB has a critical need to maintain our Wild Horse Conservation program. In 1999, ISPMB took a great leap creating a new paradigm in preservation and protection of America’s wild horses by creating this conservation program. We are the only organization in the U.S. to manage entire herds of wild horses gaining eleven years of data now.

    President, ISPMB

  3. Between removals, geldings released, PZP and more roundups coming, our wild herds are now diminished. We still need a good census from every state and people in the field observing. If there are to be more suits I hope they are being filed. Owyhee should be stopped. Please step up your efforts and keep calling and writing all those who can or should stop this train wreck that continues to destroy the lives of so many of our wild ones.

Winter Ridge and Hill Creek Roundups in Utah should also be stopped as there are no horses there and BLM will have to pull them off the nearby reservations to come up with wild horses. This is fraud on the American taxpayer.

Where we do have herds that are targeted please fight for them. mar

  4. “… where you will see our on-the-range population estimate of 38,400…”
And according to all BLM sources, half that number – 19,200 – occupy HMAs in Nevada, less the 1900 brutalized outta the Calicos. So 17,300.
Now, last I read, isn’t that very close to the ‘sustainable estimates’ for what Nevada can support?
So the Nevada Roundup Season should be an over & done deal, right?
I question tim gorey’s abilities & knowledge on this; I’m pretty sure he’s simply mouthing the words & numbers like a good little Bureauist because, really, how many of these folks perform actual ‘on-the-range’ foot work?
I’m reminded of bob abbey’s admission that there is NO program within the Bureau to study Herds or any of their components, furthering my belief that the managing of our Wild Equines is strictly well-paid GUESS WORK.
After utilizing the GAO for information & hope, I’ve come to realize – their entire purpose is to investigate and generate reports & recommendations, many of which are STILL sitting and waiting for those recommendations to be adopted. So timmy invoking the GAO means less than throwing salt over your shoulder.

  5. The death toll continues to rise — on 7/23 they admitted to 109 — and horses keep waking up dead in their “care.”
I’m fighting to save two Calico mares during the Internet adoption, and the next time BLM staff asks me when I’m going to put my money where my mouth is, I can tell them they’ll have to come up with a different answer to “Why are you doing this to our horses?”
    Keep on caring,
    Terri
