Humane Society Veterinarian Reports Previously Undisclosed Calico Wild Horse Deaths

story by Maureen HarmonayEquine Advocacy Examiner

Deaths: During Round-up 7, Fallon Facility 76, Aborted Foals 39 = 122 Dead Horses

BLM Prisoners from Pryor Mt. Roundup - Photo by Terry Fitch

The BLM today released two reports from Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association (HSVMA) Veterinarian Dr. Eric Davis, based on his February 13th and March 6th visits to the Indian Lakes Road feedlot where the Calico Mountain mustangs are quartered.

Dr. Davis’s published commentary reveals information about the condition of the captive horses that had heretofore not been disclosed to the public.  Most shockingly, Dr. Davis described the death of a mare and foal on March 6th–deaths which were never included in the “Gather Daily Updates” on that day, or on any other day.  Here is what he said:

“A mare had just given birth at 8am when we arrived.  She had been in labor for about 20 minutes, according to Dr. (Richard) Sanford, who had been through the pens earlier in the morning.  The birth was allowed to continue in the sand lot because separating the birthing mare from the rest of the herd would be difficult and dangerous for the mare and foal.

A short time later, when we were at the chute, one of the hands came to tell Dr. Sanford that this mare had died suddenly.  Though a necropsy was not completed at the time, such an acute death during foaling was most likely due to a ruptured uterine artery.  This is a recognized complication with foaling and is nearly always fatal.  The foal was dead at birth.”

Were it not for the happenstance of Dr. Davis’s visit on March 6th, we would never have learned of these fatalities.  And if public observers had not been present on March 21st, we would never have known of the birth and subsequent death of the short-lived “dun” colt.  How many more deaths have gone unreported?

Dr. Davis pointedly probed some of the BLM’s questionable management practices–such as the use of electric prods to goad horses during loading, unloading, and processing–but seemed to glide over other techniques that have been directly responsible for the deaths of many of the horses.

With regard to the electric prods, on February 13th, Dr. Davis said, “Electric prods were present but were only used when horses could not be coaxed ahead in any other way.”  But by March 6th, he noted that he did not observe the use of electric prods on any horses.  “In fact,” he said, “I did not see an electric prod anywhere around the chute area or anywhere else on the premises.”  Without knowing whether Dr. Davis’s visits were unannounced or anticipated, it’s difficult to know whether the BLM has abandoned the use of electric prods or now simply keeps them out of sight during “official” inspections.

Astonishingly, Dr. Davis accepted at face value, facility veterinarian Dr. Richard Sanford’s opinion that most of the horses who had died had succumbed to hyperlipemia and “refeeding syndrome,” without ever asking to review the individual horses’ laboratory test results.  To his credit, he admitted that this was “an oversight” and said that “Dr. Sanford has been asked to provide documentation.”

But even more troubling, Dr. Davis never investigated two of the most notorious deaths that occurred soon after the actual roundup:  those of the two colts whose feet had sloughed off.  Disappointingly, he seemed to accept as inevitable that some of the young wild horses would suffer serious injuries to their hoof walls and laminae, without questioning whether the helicopter chases themselves are inherently inhumane.

  1. I may be a punk for bringing this up – most of the horses diagnosed with hyperlipemia were SHOT because of their illness; only a very few, according to the Gather Report actually ‘died’ from it.
Like little One Day: I think it’s important WE, at least, make the distinction between Captives that have died for whatever reasons and Captives that are shot – for BLM reasons.
Are there ANY over 20 years old left alive?
All of this antipathy toward the Bureau could be mitigated a little if one of them, just one, would stand up for these animals.
But I am grateful for those of you who do.

The BLM, Ken Salazar & Wild Horses

      An Editorial

We have taken an interest in the Wild Horse issue. This symbol of the west where we live, work, raise our children and sometimes try to remember a time when fences, freeways and politics didn’t rule the land.

Unfortunately money has always spoken louder than good sense. Some would say good horse sense. And in this case it is the horses who have been knocked senseless by Department of Interior head, Ken Salazar and his Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

If you have been reading our articles (See the accompanying article and check out our Archives.), you know the detail of the horrors the BLM has inflicted on this noble animal. You also know that this has been done at great expense to the American taxpayer. Why? Follow the money as they say. There is only so much land. The horses are competing with moneyed cattle ranchers. It doesn’t take a degree from an Ivy League University to figure out who is going to win out on that range.

Oh yes, the BLM has come up with lots of reason the horses have to go. They all dry up in the desert wind, like made up stories by a child trying to get out of doing something wrong.

      Simple as that.

      Simple as that.

We at The Desert Independent therefore say to the BLM, shame on you.

You have not discharged your duty to your country.

You have not discharged your duty to its citizens.

You have not discharged your duty most importantly to the now helpless horses in your charge.

Ken Salazar, you and the BLM have hidden yourselves away from the light of the public eye. And, apparently for good reason. What you have done and not done. What you are doing would never withstand public scrutiny.

You must ask yourselves, who works in the dark?

      The answer is clear.

    • Far be it from me to defend the BLM, I concemn them as an organization, however there are people at those holding facilities who do care about those horses and are doing the best that they can given the fact they are stuck with this mess. The only humane thing to have done with this newborn foal would be to put him down immediately-to have him trampled by horses to death would be really cruel..This is all as a result of the gather which is where our anger should be directed..Those mares should have been foaling out in the wild in wide open spaces..The mare that died with a ruptured uterine artery would have died out on the range as would have her foal-that is just a fact..there is absolutely nothing you can do about it..

The thing that upsets me about the BLM and our whole government is the corrupt culture they nurture and allow to flourish, and the attitude of ENTITLEMENT they display.

      • Sandra, thanks for this perspective. I have had similar thoughts but unable to put into words as clearly.

I am on a roller coaster ride of emotions blaming everyone and anyone to trying to give some a break. I am failing woefully at giving them a break – your post has helped.

  2. This is a start. And this vet did admit a couple of oversights on his part. It’s starting to bring into focus what most of us have been saying–that the BLM is not competent to handle the wild horses. I mean this towards Washington not us. People are starting to ask the hard questions and not just taking BLM’s word that “we know what we are doing”.

As a total aside, I tried like crazy yesterday to send my letter that I sent Mr. Abbey last week onto the Pres. Guess what? IT WOULD NOT GO THROUGH. Has my fax number been blocked? Inquiring minds…

  3. They are ALWAYS on my mind. I never stop praying for their release and making phone calls, letters, etc. If only as many people would call about them as they call into American idol, there would be a moratorium already. Bunch of lemmings….
I wish I could be with them so they could hear a kind voice and know they are loved.

  4. Laura, thanks for all you do. You and so many others inspire us with your images and words. Saving not only the wild ones, but also our American public lands requires changing the ENTIRE culture of the BLM and DOI. They have been allowed to get away with too much for too long. Their attitude of ENTITLEMENT, not responsible management, must stop.

  5. RE: Electric Prods. Last year Farmington hosted the National High School Finals Rodeo. Electric prods were used on reluctant horses tender areas to “coax” them from the chutes and “encourage” them to “perform” so kids would get higher scores.

The units were small enough to be used and then slipped into the abusers’ pockets. The NHSFR officials and the stock contractor tried to deny it, but there were photos, video, and eyewitness reports. The general public was outraged, but there were some who said, publically and privately, it was “just part of the game”.

    • If the Mega Sanctuary includes original lands from the ’71 Act it is legal to create refuges or sanctuaries and this is part of strategy that has been put forth to BLM to solve the problems .. It is better that they redo HMAs and AMLs and get the new studies done to accomplish this since they have not been doing Horse studies at all. If done properly and with the wild ones included as the primary species along with other wildlife this could be very successful. Bur we know BLM. Yet this time around they have all of us watching the preparation of any new management area and style. This is the time to be showing them Reserve Design applications for these areas. Is this or is this not a direction we want to go in??? If we can manage a say and see the Board become one with Knowledgeable persons and locals, it could fly…. mar

President Obama needs to dissolve and do away with the BLM totally, our wild horses do not need the BLM to oversee them. The bad weather and the preditors limit the size of the bands, without the BLM’s help.It is a shame people like the BLM exist, they’ve got to be the clodest heartless people on this earth.I don’t know how they can sleep at night without having nightmares, with everything they’ve done and are doing to these magnificent beautiful horses. We all need to tell President Obama to disband the BLM and stop paying the tax payers money to them.As all they do is treat these majestic animals with disgrace, and inhumanely.abuse neglect kill them. The BLM should be prosecuted to the limit of the law for what they’ve been doing and have done in the past and continue to do and should be STOPPED NOW!!!while we still have wild horses left,so they will be roaming free forever as the Lord intended them to do.They need to stop injecting the mares so they won’t foal and leave the Stalliions ,stallions as God intended them to multiply and run free on their open ranges, and get the cattle off their land and return the land to the horses as it was to be for the horses and burro’s forever and ever.I e-mail the President and my Senators and the ASPCA,WASPCA and anyone I can think to e-mail to save our beautiful horses that are very much a part of HISTORY.Remember how man had transportation to begin with how the mail was delivered I could go on,on about what the horses meant to the building of this country we call the United States of America.May God Bless our wild Horses, and save them,so our grandchildrens children and so on will be able to see them roam free and not by reading about them in a book.

Stallion & Mares Need Help! Urgent!

    Dear Friends,
I received an email last night from Judy Barnes with the Spirit of the Wild Horse Foundation. Please read below and help save these magnificent animals.
    Madeleine

This stallion and his mares were rounded up by a local rancher in San Luis, Co and they will be going to the sale barn on Thursday April 8 and most likely the slaughter house.
The rancher had told Judy Barnes with the Spirit of the Wild Horse Foundation that she could have the stallion back but is not returning her calls. She asked for the mares also, since he will not stay in a new location without his mares. Judy has purchased 30 wild horses from this guy so far in the last 3 years to release back to the wild.

This stallion is amazing, his name is Jet. Judy Barnes has been photographing his for 8 years. Judy has contacted the US Marshal, BLM and the branding inspector and nobody will do anything.

Judy is working with the land owner and the local sheriff. The negotiations have stalled and at this point the only way to get the horses back will be to buy them. If the rancher does not contact her today, she will be at the sale barn in Monte Vista, CO tomorrow, April 8 with the branding inspector and photos of the horses. The branding inspector is checking with the main office in Denver to see what else can be done. If the sheriff does anything before Judy can locate where the horses are being hidden, she’s afraid the horses will be destroyed to get rid of evidence. Judy thinks she can get the mares for a couple hundred each, and the stallion for five hundred, but she don’t know how many he has, and many of the mares are ready to foal. Its possible he has about 30 horses. Judy Barnes has requests out for donations from foundation supporters. Any help is greatly appreciated, donations are tax deductible. Spirit of the Wild Horse Foundation is a non-profit for the Preservation and Protection of Wild Horses. The foundation can accept Visa & MC or checks can be mailed to: Spirit of the Wild Horse Foundation PO Box 100 Costilla,NM 87524. She is getting a PayPal account set up for the foundation. • Why is this rancher rounding up horses? It is illegal for him to do so. If they are wild they are protected by Federal law! The BLM and other departments under the DOI are the only ones ALLOWED to round up horses.

If these horses are estrays, state government and laws in their juristiction should appy! If he hasn’t turned horses over to them, he should be charged, and I encourage you to file a complaint against this ranching doing so!

      • Until now the real land owner had not been involved. He is now, and has said he wants the horses left alone so the sheriff is involved, also. This bad neighbor has been playing games for years. I am hoping that all the horses are out there. Judy is still looking. There is no federal ‘protection’ for these wild herds that have been here hundreds of years and do have Spanish ancestry. These horses have been through very much harassment over the years but have also contributed to locals horses and apparently still do when domestic and wild come in contact on the private range. How can we approach creating protections that extend to these herds that move across private lands?? Any ideas? mar

  12. Sickening this first most public of BLM ‘care’ exposes how awefull the BLM is. One can pnly imagine how horrific it was for all the thousands of round-ups totally hidden from view.

Is there anyway a GPS location/address can be given to local airports, hire a plane to get quality images? There are services that take pictures from the air using good quality cameras.
We NEED all these BLM holding areas photographed from the air to see what they have going on in the back hidden areas.

  13. That is my question aswell, how can a rancher get away with this. today?

We understand that for 40-60 years ranchers did just ship to slaughter or shoot any wild horses they wanted. However in TODAYs world how can he get away with this?

    • Don’t understand why it happened so fast either. One day he tells her he is releasing the horses, the other day they are going to be auctioned. She must be sitting at the auction block right now trying to save as many horses as possible, from the sale of a PRIVATE entity!

    • Everybody who’s notified looks the other way. They figure it’s fewer “excess” or “nuisance” horses government agencies have to deal with, and they don’t have to bother with all the messy things that come with horsestealing. Besides, it’s a “good ol’ boy”, “Code of the West” thing.

We know of at least one local guy who goes up and steals wild horses off the Jicarilla (USFS). Then he “trains” the horses and sells them to support his “Christian” church camp for children. What kind of moral example does that set for the community and the kids? It’s pretty widely known by our local horse community. Some people have tried to turn him in, but nothing comes of it. Others defend him because he’s “doing God’s work” helping the children.

He’s also been turned in for neglect, but somehow the skinny horses disappear (last time by the trailer load!) before the livestock inspector gets there. Someone’s been tipping him off, and I don’t think it’s God whispering in his ear!

  14. Judy is trying to recover the horses today. She has the authorities and the actual landowner on her side. The horses will not be sold. She assured me this. She was told they were released and has been out on the back roads looking since yesterday. They had never been hauled and the rancher had held them hostage for a week! There are pregnant mares she worries will abort or may have. This guy will not do this again. It took her years to stand up to him and get people behind her. When I hear from her I will tell you. She just needs to lay eyes on them. They may be hiding as they were traumatized. Just hope for a good ending. mar

    • Hi friends, This evening I called Judy Barnes about the Stallion and mares that a rancher had rounded up off private property (not his) and held captive all week for ransom, while Judy negotiated and found the land owner who himself called the sheriff. She spent today searching the stock yards at a sale barn and met the owners and people who work the chutes and showed them photos and told them the story. The Brand Inspector and the Sheriff being present and available to help her if she found them. She used binoculars and surveyed trucks and pens but none of her herd was found. The people there now know what the horses look like. While in Monte Vista she met a neighbor of the rancher/horsenapper who told her she had seen the Stallion standing in the back of a trailer for at least two days. This is terrible abusive treatment of a wild horse. She continued the search on the back roads. She saw many horses she knew and will be talking to the sheriff again in hopes she will be able to prevent the horsenapper from ever rounding up the local horses again. She will have a wild horse tour out on Saturday as it is scheduled and this is one of the things she does for awareness and education. Eco-Tours! Then, if she has not found the horses by Sunday, Roger and I will go down with one of our pickups and help her get further out and look. We used to live just south in Taos County, NM. I am sorry that the horses are as yet unaccounted for. Again, all we can do is hope for the best outcome. Judy said she knew people were sending goodness and love her way and to the horses. Tonight she will answer emails. mar

The auctions know darn well that some ranchers POACH wild horses and sell to slaughter.

Time to charge these auctions with crimes!! They are like a pawn shop that accepts stolen goods!!

    Like

    • I agree. What I don’t like about the story of the stolen stallion is that there was an auction the next day, which means that killbuyers were present in the area, and that the thief could have contacted them directly. Wondering if anyone checked the trucks, but at the same time I am praying that Jet is free with his mares and is hiding out in the countryside.

      Like

      • true15, As posted above Judy checked all the trucks and met the owner and left a photo. There was a truck loading horses and a pony for the drive to Mexico.

This morning she told me that the mares are found and OK. She is hoping that Jet will make his way back to them. When I get more details I will post them.
Judy was out for 6 hours and covered 200 miles of back roads yesterday so she is taking today off. I think Jet will find his mares if he can… mar

  18. I was at Fallon with Terri Farley the week before Easter. Our “guide” told us clearly and repeatedly that they DO NOT COUNT THE FOALS until they are PROCESSED! So there are countless untold babies that are born, die and simply DO NOT EXIST. THEY ARE PHANTOMs. Sure makes BLM look better when the public never even hears of the existence of the newborns that are left in with masses of adult horses and are kicked, trampled and otherwise injured and die horrible deaths. How convenient. We saw babies that were newborn to several days old in with large numbers of adults, even as we were told that they were moved the same or next day. We need to start a photo album of these babies so they are not just thrown away and unaccounted for.
