Tomorrow Convicted Horse Murderer Jason Meduna is Sentenced

Commentary by  R.T. Fitch

Meduna is Guilty but what about his Followers?

One of over 70 Wild Horses found dead on Meduna's Ranch

From across the bridge and through the fog of death the screams and cries of the starved horses were heard; heard loud and clear. Jason  Meduna was found guilty.  A horse murder was brought to justice.  Strike one up for the horses, or 145 up as that is the number of felony animal cruelty counts that Meduna was found guilty of, 145 out of 149, the horses were clearly heard.

A horse murderer was exposed for what he really is; a twisted excuse of a human soul who will be sentenced tomorrow and hopefully put away for a very long time.  The horses were heard yet a few murderers still slipped away.  Jason had friends, Jason had supporters who stood there and argued that he was doing the right thing while the piles of bodies laid around them; they had succumbed to the legend that raged on in Jason’s own mind, the mind of a manipulator and a fraud.

Meduna may have finally gotten caught, but many around him escaped into the dark and laid low during the trial so as not to focus the bright light of justice upon themselves.  They were the ones that cried out against the dying horses being taken from 3-Strikes in an effort to save them.  They were the voices that lied along with Jason about the dead horses being poisoned.  They changed tactics when the poison story fell apart and started to scream about a strange and exotic disease that the horses had.  They shook their fists at HSUS, Front Range, Habitat for Horses and shocked owners for their rehabilitation and re-homing efforts saying that the exotic equine disease would be spread across the U.S. and wipe out all equines in the country.  They even managed to get a reporter or two to listen.

Where are those horse killing supporters now?

Tomorrow the Judge sentences the scheming horse murderer and hopefully he will be put away for life, never again to knowingly harm and kill a horse.

But what about those that got away, the wife, the group that supported him, the BLM for failure to inspect, where are they in this legal mess of death and starvation?

Many questions, no real answers and no further convictions but one thing is for certain; tomorrow Jason Meduna will feel the full brunt of the Force of the Horse® and it won’t be painless.  I hope that it stings for a lifetime and the screams never leave his ears.

May the souls across the bridge now have peace and know that their sacrifice has put a horse murderer away, forever, where he can never harm another equine, again.

  1. I am waiting anxiously! But you are right is there anything that can be done about all of those other people responsible for this? I have always said he didnt do this alone, it would be sweet revenge for the horses if we could hold the others accountable too.

  2. I hope Meduna gets the maximum penalty under law. If the punishment doesn’t fit the crime, I’d be taking a long, hard look at the judge.

As for his accomplices, they may have escaped human law, but what goes around comes around. I don’t think “the devil made me do it” will work in the celestial court.

We’ve had disasterous outcomes in NM equine cruelty cases, especially with concurrent sentences. I pray the judge enforces each count individually, and puts this terrible man away for a VERY long time.

  3. Off-topic regarding “exotic equine diseases”: If Salazar’s relocation plans go through, won’t the wild horses be exposed to “exotic” diseases from domestic horses and unaccustomed environments? Our vet has said diseases once confined to the coasts and mid-west are showing up in more and more NM horses.

  4. Linda I think the whole thing of relocating is stupid and hopefully wont happen. These horses have adapted themselves to live where they are now not on lush pastures or any other terrain. If the terrain was remotely similar then sure I can see it not being a problem MAYBE but you are probably right on the diseases thing. They can look after themselves where they are. As humans we could learn a lot from them, instead of changing the environment to suit our “comfort” let the environment teach us. So frustrating.

I just hope that this barbarian’s sentences are set to run consecutively (one after the other) rather than concurrently (together i.e. he will only get a few years on each charge which will run at the same time therefore he will be free after only a few years) Hope I got that the right way round!!

    • There’s gonna be a whole lot to do on them thar “lush pastures”: vaccinations, cycled de-worming (no more herbal remedies), teeth floating (no more tough grasses and “woody shrubs”), hoof care (no more self-trimming), supplemental feed when grass goes dormant. All this for $475 per horse per year? I don’t think so!

And that’s just the basics IF they stay healthy. If anything out of the ordinary happens, it’ll be “euthanasia” by bullet.

People refer to “Salazoos”, but zoos welcome the public almost every day of the year. Their funding often requires active research and breeding programs. Salazar’s non-reproducing, formerly-wild horses will be held on “preserves”. No matter what he has said about “tourism”, public access will be tightly controlled. If something goes wrong, no one will ever see or hear about it.

Sadly, the general public will eat it up and never know the difference. “Mommy, look at the wild horses. Aren’t they beautiful!” The whole thing turns my stomach.

  5. The biggest sinner here is the Federal Government. They gave him these doomed horses. They failed to follow-up. They kept rounding up horses and burros with no money or space. They are the problem here and while I type they proceed to round-up, dispose and kill more on my dime.

It’s one thing for a demented human with demented human supporters to do this, but for a government agency to be involved, to condone and sanction this is outrageous.

God may get these people in the next life, but I want my pound of flesh from these government officials NOW. And no, I want their hides….not our national treasure, the mustang’s hide.

    • The BLM uses 75% of its budget on round ups and warehousing horses. Not much left after salaries for follow up, is there? If any animal rescue organization continuously adopted out animals to people like this or people who sold them to slaughter, they’d be shut down. If the BLM does it, they get an increase in their budget.

  6. Off topic and I apologize, but I’m on a mission to try really hard to make Kenny have to hem-n-haw-n-stutter his way through Commitee on Wednesday, so here goes:
I believe Diane Feistein is chairing the meeting where SalaCzar will plead his case.
    Her website is Feinstein.Senate.gov.
Write her a note, if you can. Explain that she should ask Kenny where the WH&B Program budget goes. Since last Spring, hay and gas prices have dropped and stabilized, so why is it still going to cost more to feed and care for the Captives, aside from more Captives?
The remaining approximately $30M goes for the rest of the very passive, on the range WH&B Management Program. Since the Wild Ones are not supplementally fed, not vetted, and the range is not reseeded or replanted for THEIR welfare, what exactly, aside from ‘monitoring’ and ‘gathering’ is that money used for ??!
Before he goes askng for more than $40M for a parcel of land for a sanctuary, shouldn’t he be asked to show why the Program’s budget isn’t working?
I don’t know who else will be in attendance at Commitee, so I don’t know who else to contact. But if We the Taxpayers are being screwed so badly by the current WH&B Program, I’m gonna want to know WHY, by number and rote.
Please, Fellas; write to Sen. Feinstein or anyone else you know who might be there. I know her reliability with regards to our Advocacy is iffy at best. But this has less to do with the Advocacy and more to do with calling the DOI and BLM to account for the very expensive Program that is NOT ‘managing Wild Horses and Burros and the Managemnt Areas they occupy’.

  7. Off topic, too – I just read that Salazar’s budget hearing has been postponed. No reschedule yet.

Also, I read on a blog that the BLM are reporting LOTS of wild horses in “poor condition”. The photos of the wild horses I am seeing are of mostly healthy animals. If humane observers are not going to be allowed to look at the condition of the wild horses, except maybe once a week, is it possible that the BLM may starve the horses so that they will appear emaciated when they shoot them? If so, who will know?

    • equus5 – maybe someone wants a look-see at the budget?
I can’t help but be hopeful – because this entire situation is so out of control, and it surely can’t just be us who see it.

      well, this is really interesting…..

two ***king websites state that salazar’s meeting/hearing is postponed no date given. yet someone just got off the phone with a senator alexander’s office & was told that the meeting was still on.

would they be petty enough to do that? say that it’s cancelled & still have it????

      hmmmmm. yes, indeed.
i’ll keep you posted if i hear more…..

  8. Our society is finally beginning to start the long climb to a more civilized and caring people.
When cruel and unethical people like Jason Meduna are prosecuted and exposed for the evil that they do, we ascend one more rung up that ladder to an evolved society where cruelty and injustice to all living things is abolished.

  9. Meduna most likely will get away with probation or/and community service. His claims of the horses being “poisoned” by neighbors are pretty questionable – had this been the case then why not ask for serious help earlier. This case is yet another testimony of a failing BLM, lacking positions to oversee the fate of mustangs, in the hands of some wanna be cowboy who might know how to handle horses but has no integrity nor conscience. BLM, once again, allowing havoc to take place, an agency so out of whack it is hard to believe it is happening in America – all in charge turning a blind eye and acting deaf – or corrupt. The fate of the wild horses in BLM hands or twisted individuals such as Meduna show there is a huge lack of “caring” – these poor animals have become a pawn of egos and greed – or ignorance – I hope Meduna gets what he deserves.

    • But he won’t get what he and the other killer facilitators deserve….the system is set up to diminsh animal’s worth of life at all costs. The first fatality after the animal is always justice.

  10. may the 145 felony GUILTYs and the sentence set the bar HIGH- for the next horse killers out there to bring to justice!

Thank God for the internet!! no longer can animal abusers like meduna and the BLM hide their horse-killing deeds.

Though they still pretend its impossible to run a webcam 24/7 (like many zoos do today.) The BLM ignoring calls for webcams-makes the BLM look crooked and crazy and confirms they really do have a LOT to hide!

  11. and by the way. Medunas biggest ‘supportor’ that Ray dude and his Texas mustang website with the pictures and phone vids harassing the mustang rescue.

Where is Fields pictures of his entire many acres and all his mustangs? Hes had 100s of mustangs go through his hands, where are they today? whats going on there out of public view?

    • Good question, Laura.

Ray Fields was defending Meduna right up to the trial. His website was littered with raging insults and untruths regarding Jerry Finch and those who saved the horses. He was one of the major sources for the “illness” lie. He was Medunas “big buddy” and yet he never showed up to the trial and let Jason burn while he went on with his distorted perception of the truth.

He’s one, he’s one who got away…but everyone knows who Ray Fields is so everyone ignores him. He is, literally, outstanding in his own Field.

  12. Below is my responce from Sally Spencer, so you have an idea where they stood against Meduna. I think his wife should be charged too, I am praying for prison.

    Dear Lin,

Ramona DeLorme forwarded your e-mail to me. The BLM did not sell pregnant
mares to the Medunas. As for stallions, our gelding policy at the time was
to geld 4 year and older horses. Some of the horses sold to Meduna were
younger than that at the time of sale and were sold as stallions.

After receiving reports of neglect, the BLM inspected Jason Meduna’s 3
Strikes Ranch near Alliance, Nebraska on April 14th. Mr. Meduna has
purchased over 200 wild horses from the BLM since 2005 and adopted six.
The BLM found the horses on Mr. Meduna’s property to be in poor to
extremely poor condition. A veterinarian determined that the poor
    condition is likely from malnutrition.

The animals purchased from BLM were titled to Meduna. The six adopted wild
horses and burros were untitled, and thus were still federal property.
During the compliance visit, the BLM took possession of one of the six
adopted animals when Mr. Meduna willingly relinquished the horse back to
the BLM. Mr. Meduna stated during the visit that the 3 untitled burros had
died although he had not reported their deaths to BLM. One of the other
two animals was reported dead by Mr. Meduna on March 27, 2009. Mr. Meduna
could not locate the remaining untitled horse and stated that it may be
    dead.

By law, the BLM is responsible for wild horses and burros that are
untitled. Once a wild horse or burro is titled it loses its protective
status under the law and the BLM cannot legally repossess the horse or
burro or provide funding for the care of the animals. Adopted animals are
typically titled one year after adoption. Animals that are purchased under
the BLM’s sale authority are titled immediately.

The BLM was very concerned about the horses and has learned from Jerry
Finch of Habitat for Horses that all horses have either been adopted or
sent to the Black Beauty Ranch in Texas. If you are still interested in
helping the horses please contact Habitat for Horses at
    office@habitatforhorses.org or 866-434-5737.

The BLM has received complaints in the past about the ranch and has
inspected Mr. Meduna’s facilities and animals and found no violations
    previously.

Any prosecution for the deaths and neglect of non-BLM horses will be
handled by local authorities. The BLM will work with appropriate federal
or local prosecutors on charges related to the BLM wild horses.

Thank you for opening up your heart to some of these horses. Sally
