BLM’s Wild Horse Numbers Just Don’t Add Up

Op-Ed by R.T. Fitch, author of “Straight from the Horse’s Heart

HOUSTON (SFTHH) – Friday, the 5th of February, seemed more like Groundhog’s Day than did February 2nd.  There was an unpleasant odor of déjà vu in the air all thanks to the bumbling and mumbling of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

On September 9th, 2009 wild horse advocates were both surprised, yet pleased, to hear the BLM announce that they had concluded their highly contested and unnecessary wild horse round-up, early, in Montana’s Pryor Mountains.  Along with the announcement came a mathematical breakdown of how many horses had been stripped from their lawful homes and how many were allowed to remain.  The numbers did not add up.

On February 5th, 2010 wild horse advocates were both surprised, yet pleased, to hear the BLM announce that they had concluded their highly contested and deadly wild horse round-up, early, in Nevada’s Calico Mountain complex.  Along with the announcement came a mathematical breakdown of how many horses had been stripped from their lawful homes and how many were allowed to remain.  The numbers did not add up.

Do we detect a pattern, here?

Let’s take a look at the math that surrounds the Calico round-up as it depicts the destruction of the largest wild horse herd that had managed to survive in our western United States.

The BLM’s 2/5/2010 press release states that they stripped the 550,000 acre complex of 1,922 native wild horses.  They now estimate that 600 remain alive and free.  The math indicates that there must have been a total of approximately 2,400 wild horses on the complex prior to the round-up.

Yet the BLM’s original plan stated that they had intended to gather approximately 3,000 wild horses, releasing 380 back to a remaining population of 220 which would leave 600 free in the complex.  But that equation would mean that the total population, prior to round-up, would have been around 3,200.  That leaves a difference of 800 horses from what actually occurred and what the BLM had proposed to do.  Where are the missing 800 horses?

The BLM used the later numbers to justify their attack yet their actual numbers are considerably lower, if you believe them.  Why such an enormous discrepancy?  Is this sort of incorrect, grade school math utilized across the board when mismanaging one of our rarest and most unique national treasures?

BLM contractor Cattoor Helicopter - Photo by Terry Fitch

Keeping this gross lack of accuracy in mind, the BLM announced that they, along with the Cattoor contractors, killed 39 wild horses during the Calico round-up.  7 were murdered at the ground-up site while 32 were destroyed at the feed-lot style holding facility.  Do we trust those numbers?  Why did they leave out the deaths of 25-30 miscarried foals from mares that were run into the ground and traumatized to the point of spontaneous miscarriage.  They also failed to mention that the Cattoor helicopters ran 2 small foals  until their little feet fell off.  With incidents like that how could BLM District Manager Gene Seidlitz make the statement that the “gather went well”?

It appears that such questions will remain unanswered as only a limited number of tax paying American citizens were allowed to view the process, on limited days, during limited hours, at an extended distance and were finally banned from observing over the past several weeks.  No hope of verification, no chance to validate the actions of a federal, government agency that obviously can’t add 1 to 1 and come up with 2.

In 2008 the benevolent BLM wanted to send 33,000 unnecessarily penned and captured native wild horses to slaughter because they couldn’t feed them.  Then they captured thousands more during 2009, almost 2,000 to date in 2010 and have announced a goal of 12,000 to be condemned to captivity in 2010, total.  Are we missing something here?

In reality, if our children went to grade school and consistently came home with math scores that were as far off-base as what the BLM has been spouting we would either forever enroll our children in a remedial math program or question the organization that was teaching them such biased science.

In the case of the BLM, it is high time that we opt for Congressional hearings on the total mismanagement of one of our rarest national icons and the completely inept interpretation of Federal law.

The time has come for the BLM to go back to school, learn how to count, get their facts straight and sit in the corner while repeating “I will not kill wild horses.  I will not kill wild horses.  I will not kill wild horses. I will not kill wild horses.”

  1. They can also repeat: “I will not round them up and put them in prison,” how many times do you think they need to repeat that before it takes hold; Oh and here’s another one, “American Citizens aare not as stupid as we thought they were!”

News Release No. Ely District Office No. 2010-00

BLM Defers Proposed Eagle HMA Gather

Ely, Nevada – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has determined there is not adequate time to safely conduct the proposed Eagle Herd Management Area (HMA) gather prior to the beginning of foaling season, and therefore, will defer issuing a decision on the proposed gather until later this year after the foaling season.

BLM will conduct further environmental analysis at that time and will extend additional opportunities for public comment prior to issuing a decision to address removal of excess wild horses from the Eagle HMA. On December 28, 2009, the BLM issued a preliminary environmental assessment (EA) proposing to gather excess wild horses from the Eagle HMA during the month of February 2010. More than 9,000 public comments were submitted following a 30-day comment period.

The preliminary EA also included a proposal to gather approximately 50 wild horses that have moved outside of the Eagle and Silver King Herd Management Areas (HMA) and that are threatening the safety of motorists along U.S. Highway 93 near Pioche, Nev. The BLM is aware of at least three animals that have been hit by vehicles during the past year.

BLM is currently considering options for gathering these horses outside HMA boundaries. BLM anticipates issuing a decision in the next week addressing removal of wild horses along the highway to address the potential risks to the public and to the horses.

  3. This is good but could not help myself on this one

So i guess the BLM need to come and take all the deer out of So IL too because atleast every other day here someone hits a deer sometimes several deer a day get hit. All they do here is give out more deer tags and guess what the more deer tags and hunters they allow the more people hit the deer maybe we should stop chasing all these animals and they won’t run out in the road that much. Losing 3 horses in a year is not bad at all we lose 200-300 deer a year from cars and trucks.

  4. This is great!!!!!!! and yes Lori, I agree about the deer, whenever I hear that wild horses have become a nuisance to people, I wonder why we don’t have deer roundups, they cause way more problems than horses, but this still doesn’t take away from the awesomeness of what is happening, WE ARE MAKING A HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!!

  5. Yep its awsome very awsome!!!!! I hope the cattoors get busted for taking too many horses from calico and they and blm lose their jobs then maybe the horses can repopulate. Still wish i could give Tomahawk a home. I bet the BLM hates looking at this site seeing how many horse lovers there are our there. I am still looking for more land so i can do my fair share. I feel bad saying i only have one wild horse that calls my home his home my other 2 are domestic horses that were rescues. I wish I could say I rescued more wild ones. But guess what my wild boy don’t have any nasty freeze marks on him an individual rounded him up and tried to sell him to slaughter.

  9. I have sent an e-letter to Pres. Obama, and a snail mail letter to Mrs. Obama. I have written to BLM asking for a refund of my taxpayer money– that I do not agree with, and will not support their policies. Just keep on keepin’ on. Put the wild horse ( and burro) on your endangered list– I hope they are out there running free for Sasha and Malia to see on trip to the wild west!

  10. RT for some reason you seem to always hit the nail right smack on the head everytime! You never miss!

While I took some needed down time this weekend its back to the grind in the morning. For little Courage (the first youngster to have his feet torn off)and for Hope Springs Eternal I will again start writing my Senators and calling on the Pres for an immediate moratorium on all roundups until and independent assessment can and will be made.

  11. I would like verification that 600 horses remain wild. If the BLM originally counted 3200 horses and planned to round up 2500-2800, and then stopped at 1922 because there are only 600 left, how can we believe their population counts? Who verifies that they did indeed leave horses behind. And of the acceptable figure for them is 600-900 left on the range, can we move to get 300 released for the genetic health of the bands? Why do they always round up on the maximum end of the acceptable numbers?

    • My apologies in advance to folks who already know about this site. I don’t mean to be a pest, but I consider an opportunity to help wild horses or any horses worth repeating.

I think this would be a great topic to post on the Department of the Interior’s new “Idea” website. This is the direct link to their sign-up page:

      http://openinterior.ideascale.com/

Be sure to read the “Terms of Participation” carefully, so our ideas, votes, and comments will be posted. As always, messages to any government agency or individual should be constructive and respectful.

I received a reminder from the Site Moderator stating, “Personal attacks on BLM employees, contractors, or anyone else violate the Terms of Participation for this dialogue.” and “Let’s keep it focused on the program overall, not individuals.” They have already removed these types of comments. It would be a shame to lose an entire “Idea” and its votes because of a violation. We need to play by their rules to ensure every vote counts.

The deadline for posts is March 19th. I hope as many individuals as possible submit a variety of ideas and comments on wild horse and BLM issues. That way the DOI will know how many different people are calling for change.

And don’t forget to vote on every relevant topic! They’re tracking email signatures, so we only can cast one vote for each idea. Every “New Idea” will provide another opportunity to vote and comment, multiplying our voices exponentially and strengthening our position.

Ideas and votes on BLM policies and practices, especially regarding wild horse and burro issues, are outstripping all others. This should be a wakeup call for change at the BLM and help save wild horses, whether on the range or in prison.

Please forward this information to every wild horse supporter and organization you can think of.

The DOI has asked for input, so let’s give it to them!

  12. Well, on another note when will the gov. start to manage “Human Population” problems? I mean we are running every animal and creature out of their natural habitat due to our increase in breeding and size! At this rate even the worm will be extinct soon.
