The clock is ticking for the wild horses of the Pryor Mountains

Time is running out for Cloud and his herd

by R.T. Fitch

Since the fateful day of September 11th, 2001 early autumn has had the propensity to give Americans the jitters and this year will be no different.  There is the feeling of impending doom surrounding us, an unsettling sensation of upcoming loss and the smell of future deaths lay heavy in the air; something, again, is about to rip our American hearts out in the early days of September.  But this time, we can do something about it.

On September 1st, 2009 the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is planning to launch a full scale aerial attack on one of our most famous and iconic treasures of the American west, the small wild horse herd tucked away in the Pryor Mountains of Montana known as “Cloud’s Herd”.

Our wild horses under attack by the BLM

The BLM has not found it necessary to harass and decimate this herd, as they have done so often elsewhere, in over 15 years.  Why now?  Particularly considering the fact that they plan on taking so many horses that the herd will no longer be genetically viable and will surely die out.

The method of capture that the BLM uses is an aerial assault of helicopters that terrorize the horses and drives them into corrals at full speed.  This panicked stampede, down the steep mountain sides, may be for tens and tens of miles and always results in injury or death for the foals while many more horses are brutalized or killed running into the chute.  There is no excuse for any of this.

We have embedded, below, a video of this herd shot recently by an amateur cinematographer who lives near the Pryor Mountains in Montana.  Sandy Church is the founder of the Rimrock Humane Society in Roundup, MT and her video montage shows just how special and serene the Pryor Mountains and their inhabitants are.

“I look at this video with tears in my eyes knowing what’s coming” Sandy says.

“Those little foals; so trusting of us, know that we will not harm them and in just a few weeks all of that will be broken, gone forever as they probably will not even be able to survive.”

“I love the Pryor Mountains”, she continued, “I always thought that this is what heaven must be like with all the splendor and beauty, but now, it will be nothing more than a killing field and the soul of this magical place will be shattered forever, it just so very, very sad.”

Our native, American, Wild Horses

Our native, American, Wild Horses

Call Secretary Salazar of the Department of Interior at 202-208-7351 and ask him to stop this senseless round-up.  Email him at exsec@ios.doi.gov and ask the same.  The only way that we can stop this is if we ALL stand up and say that we have had enough and we simply will not stand for this, anymore.  Make a difference, spread the word by telling your family, friends and business associates, we have to save what is rightfully ours, the symbol of our past and the vision of our future.  Our wild horses live on public land and belong to the American public.  We have the legal right to say “No” to these assaults.  It’s time for the bureaucrats to follow the will of the American people.

Please make the call.

  1. Sign Petition to Save Cloud’s Herd
We need 5,000 signatures – please share this petition with friends!

The round up of Cloud’s herd is scheduled for September 1st and 70 horses plus foals could lose their freedom and their families. Many of those removed would be horses in Cloud’s age group- even his 18 year old mother could be targeted for removal! This unnecessary removal must be stopped. Please sign this petition which will be sent to Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar and BLM Director Bob Abbey. Please click here to sign the petition- it only takes a moment!

  2. After trying to call Sec. Salazar several times I Emailed him but have not received a reply about this latest theft of our American wild horses by our own governement that was entrusted with their protection and preservation. THe Pryor Mt. BLM did not return my Emails either. As for Bob Abbey he just turned everything over to the local BLM and has done nothing. So much for the change for the better I was hoping and praying for with the Dept. of the Interior. The autrocities continue as the last of our American wild horses are wiped out.

I cannot for the life of me understand why the BLM is so hellbent on destroying everything beautiful to behold: every innocent animal in this world. The BLM bureaucrats — and thus those in the ranks they report to — are terroristic killers who are, to the horses, just as scary as Al Qaeda is to humans.

May God’s powerful mercy intervene between now and Sept. 1st and cause a Saul-to-Paul conversion or a ring of fire around the horses protecting them from being seen and driven away from their home sweet home.

  4. 11th Hour for Cloud’s Herd,
    URGENT MESSAGE ABOUT THE PYRORS
Please act now to stop this unnecessary and cruel round up— the BLM still plans to move forward on September 1st

The Bureau of Land Management is rounding up and eliminating 12 herds (650 horses) off 1.4 million acres in Nevada right now– next they plan to destroy Cloud’s herd with a massive removal of 70 horses that would include OLDER HORSES and YOUNG FOALS.
Many of the horses you have come to love in the Cloud shows and will meet in the new Cloud show on October 25th will lose their families and their freedom next week. By zeroing out whole herds and reducing others to below genetic viability, the BLM is circumventing the will of Congress. The House just passed the Restoring of American Mustangs (ROAM) act and the Senate will review this bill (now S.1579) when they return from recess in September. Is BLM just trying to do as much irrevocable damage to America’s wild horses as they can before Congress can act?
This round up will start on September 1st unless we can stop it. Removing 70 horses will destroy this unique little Spanish herd, leaving them well below the bare minimum for genetic viability. The range is in great condition and the horses are healthy. This removal should be stopped. Please do all you can to help! 6. May the Great Creator of All look over you and yours in these upcoming days of trauma; Cloud, be brave, be wise (as always), be strong, and know that We Love You and everyOne of your family and your herd. There are Miracles…Cloud, you are a miracle…an ambassador…for 2 species, maybe more. May it be that the Creator will deliver a very Special Miracle this week to the Pryor Mountain Horse Herd. You are All Priceless! Pay my respects to the Honorable Spirit of Shaman; at least he did NOT have to leave his mountain. (Perhaps He has gone on ahead, to plead your case, and smooth your way?) I am SO SORRY that We could not do more…

  7. I am ~ a wild horse and social worker I can speak for those who can’t speak, even muted speak for our American Wild horses ~ they are our National Treasure to ROAM in freedom as a symbol of our freedom for man/animal to conserve of our natural beauty and ethical values of altruistic love. Nature & equines are our birth right ~ including the ancient bond with the dawn horse (USA /Mustangs.)
I support views of Velma Johnson, Craig Downer and PBS and Executive Director of the Cloud Foundation, as well as Ginger Kathrens views as my views for these pristine centurions. I will continue to assist this Wild Horse and speak of Wild Horses as companions, as history and to connection to our spirits of unconditional love.
Will man break their ancient bond with history ~ time will only tell. I truly hope NOT!! Wild Horses are not (hobby horses to be tossed in a cart when we are done with their use.)
I don’t understand why we always abuse them, destroy them or ship them.
We do as humans do, a disservice to things we love to later build a statue to a beautiful memory. We cannot let the spirit of the West to be put out during our Christmas Holiday.
Maybe Wild Horses are just to be looked at and we uphold a value of trust, courage, pride we will allow an animal to set the pace for ethical values rather humans weaknesses and destruction.
If we destroy the horses we are the next large mammal in the food chain will be next? Sterilizing horses as a species is no way to keep wild horses as a species alive. It is sterilizing horses to extinction. They will be long GONE.
We are all connected in the chain of life ~ we harm wild horses ~ we harm ourselves.
    Let’s do ourselves better
Best to all and to our beloved wild horses
